The best candidate for bathroom countertop refinishing is definitely cultured marble or composite all-in-one units. These seamless counter/sink pieces really refinish to look 95% new, and are a perfect solution for either owner-occupant, rental, or fixing a place up for sale.
We’ve had home sellers that have had their property on the market for 4 months with no offers, and after they make minor improvements such as refinishing all their tubs and old/worn countertops, they are rewarded with a quick sale. This is off topic for this blog, but other inexpensive things sellers should consider: repainting interior walls, replacing old/worn flooring with inexpensive vinyl or laminate, and replacing ALL fixtures with new inexpensive ones. Buyers want to see “CLEAN & NEW”. They won’t pay extra for that $500 Grohe faucet you installed so stick with the cheap stuff that looks good. Same with countertops. You could spend a thousand replacing that vanity but you’ll never get more money than if you just refinished it. Be smart, and put your money in the places where you will get it back.
Our preferred product for countertop refinishing is our commercial grade coating. The finished surface will actually be harder than the original material, even when it was brand new. This is an extremely cost effective solution, especially if we are already on site to do a bathtub because we will give you a large discount for countertop work added to bathtub work. We recommend replacing fixtures at the same time as refinishing. Other surfaces such as Formica can also be refinished if they are in as good condition, but because Formica vanities do not have integrated sinks, they don’t come out quite as nice as all-in-one composite units.
